A Christmas Greeting; Thirteen New Stories

frontis engraving; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 165 pages; hardcover in original brown cloth with elaborate decorative blind stamped designs to boards; title letteringand pictorial elements brightly in gilt to spine. Issued as one of the volumes in the Francis & Co. "Little Library". Apparently the 2nd American edition after an 1847 James Miller printing. Illustrated with tissue guarded frontis engraving of "The Little Match Girl". Snugly bound and clean. Cloth lightly crimped at spine ends with trace fray. Boards lightly bumped at corners. Period gift inscription in pencil to front endpage. All endpages present and well bound. Expected light toning and occasional spotting to page stock. One page near front has a small piece of the page at the top corner torn away; the rear free endpage is missing a more sizable piece from the top corner. Still a very solid and still quite handsome copy of this scarce early printing of some essential Andersen tal;es, including the match Girl and Red Shoes among others. Page 154 to 165 comprise an afterword by Charles Boner with several pages of publisher ads appearing at rear. VG-
